Three-dimensional Mhd Simulations of Radiatively Inefficient Accretion Flows
We present three-dimensional MHD simulations of rotating radiatively inefficient accretion flows onto black holes. We continuously inject magnetized matter into the computational domain near the outer boundary and run the calculations long enough for the resulting accretion flow to reach a quasi-steady state. We have studied two limiting cases for the geometry of the injected magnetic field: pu...
متن کاملDirect Numerical Simulations of Three-Dimensional Cavity Flows
Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of the full compressible Navier–Stokes equations are performed for cavities that are homogeneous in the spanwise direction. The formation of oscillating spanwise structures is observed inside the cavity. We show that this 3D instability arises from a generic centrifugal instability mechanism associated with the mean recirculating vortical flow in t...
متن کاملThree-Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Spherical Accretion
We present three-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulations of radiatively inefficient spherical accretion onto a black hole. The simulations are initialized with a Bondi flow, and with a weak, dynamically unimportant, large-scale magnetic field. The magnetic field is amplified as the gas flows in. When the magnetic pressure approaches equipartition with the gas pressure, the field b...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Sph Simulations of Accretion Discs *
We discuss some 3D numerical simulations of accretion discs using the SPH method and a polytropic equation of state. We show that discs exist even for as large value of the polytropic index as 1.2, and that these discs are always in hydrostatic balance. We also show that even without any inflow, spiral shocks appear in the discs.
متن کاملNumerical Simulations of Convective Accretion Flows in Three Dimensions
Advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) are known to be convectively unstable for low values of the viscosity parameter α. Two-dimensional axisymmetric hydrodynamic simulations of such flows reveal a radial density profile which is significantly flatter than the ρ ∝ r−3/2 expected for a canonical ADAF. The modified density profile is the result of inward transport of angular momentum by axi...
